PST files Outlook
Outlook supports having multiple .pst's open at the same time. Your existing "Personal Folders" will remain the destination for email but you can easily move items into another .pst file.

To Compact

In short: File-> Data File Management, select your Personal Folders, Settings, and then Compact Now.

Outlook (prior to v2003) can't read PST files that are larger than 2G in size and, as a PST file contains all your email, contacts, appointments and attachments, it's easy to exceed that size.

  1. First close Outlook and make a backup copy of the Outlook.pst file to another folder or your desktop.
  2. Reopen Outlook and click on File. Select Import and Export. Select Export to a File. Click Next. Select Personal Folder File (.pst). Click Next.
  3. Select Personal Folders, check the "Include subfolders" box and click Next.
  4. Then ■Save exported file as:■ display box should show the default, ■backup.pst■ as the destination for the exported file. Click Finish.
  5. This should write a clean data file to the same folder where your Outlook data file resides.

Close Outlook. Delete the Outlook data file and rename the backup file to ■Outlook■.
